Background

  • Yuan Hongdao (1568–1610), also known as Shigong, from Gong'an. A leading figure against literary archaism in the Ming dynasty, he championed the theory of "expressing one's own spirit, unconstrained by convention." His Biography of Xu Wenchang was written in 1599.
  • Xu Wei (1521–1593), also known as Qingteng Daoshi, from Shanyin, Shaoxing. A mid-Ming literatus, calligrapher, painter, and military strategist. A county scholar at twenty, he repeatedly failed the provincial examinations; he served as a staff advisor to Hu Zongxian, later fell into madness, attempted suicide nine times, was imprisoned for killing his second wife, and died in poverty.

Reading the Late-Ming Eccentric

The eleven instances of "wonder" in the text fall into two threads:

  • The "wonder" of the man: genius in talent, character, and personality — extraordinary ability, unrestrained temperament, unyielding dignity
  • The "wonder" of his fate: ill-fated and destitute — "If nothing about him is not strange, then how could his fate not be strange too? Alas!"

Character decides fate — this is necessity, not accident.

The Official-and-Retired Life

  • Meaning: though still holding office, his mind was already that of a hermit; the text shows a wild eccentric refusing to bow to tradition.
  • "Wonder" draws him into office: such genius should not be wasted — talent recognized and favored by Hu Zongxian.
  • "Wonder" leads him into retirement: his nonconforming pursuit of character drove him to wander mountains and rivers, pouring his inner turmoil into nature.
  • Wildness made visible: "Better to grow old among wine and flowers than bow before carriages" — refusing to flatter the world, guarding his integrity.

Conclusion

With "wonder" as the thread running through his official-and-retired life, Yuan Hongdao's Xu Wenchang — a man out of tune with his age — endures as a peerless eccentric.
